Anambra State First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, has disputed former governor Peter Obi’s claim that he and his wife, Margaret, are godparents to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s children.
The disagreement followed comments made by Obi at the 22nd Conference of the Guild of Editors in Enugu, where the former Anambra governor said he and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children and maintained that the two families remained close despite political differences.
Mrs Soludo subsequently rejected the claim, saying Peter Obi was not the godfather of any of her children and clarifying what she described as the actual relationship between the two families.
Different Accounts of Family Relationship
Obi had said he and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children while arguing that his political disagreements with the governor did not amount to a personal dispute.
His comments came amid a broader political and financial disagreement involving the two former Anambra governors, including a continuing dispute over the state’s debt and financial position when Obi left office.
Mrs Soludo’s response introduced a direct contradiction over the nature of the families’ relationship.
The disagreement is therefore centred on the factual status of the alleged godparent relationship, with the two sides giving different accounts.
Political Dispute Continues
The exchange comes against the backdrop of renewed public disagreements between Obi and Soludo, both prominent figures in Anambra politics.
Obi has continued to defend his record as governor, particularly regarding the state’s finances when he handed over power in 2014.
The Soludo administration has separately raised questions about liabilities inherited by the state, while Obi has disputed claims that he left conventional foreign debt.
The latest disagreement over the alleged godparent relationship adds a personal dimension to an increasingly public political and policy dispute between the two camps.
