Nigeria has called for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, warning that humanity cannot continue to rely on weapons capable of destroying civilisation as a foundation for international security.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, made the call on Tuesday during a high-level meeting in New York marking the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, held during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Nigeria Pushes for Global Disarmament
Ibrahim said nuclear disarmament remained an important international priority, urging countries to strengthen cooperation towards a world free of nuclear weapons.
Nigeria’s position reflects its stated support for international efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and reduce the risks associated with their possession and potential use.
The ambassador’s remarks also placed renewed emphasis on the responsibilities of the international community to pursue diplomatic solutions to security challenges.
Challenges to Nuclear Disarmament
Despite longstanding international calls for nuclear disarmament, achieving the complete elimination of these weapons remains difficult.
