Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said he will resign from office on January 17, 2027, if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the presidential election in both the FCT and Rivers State.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday during a meeting with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja, where he discussed his political efforts ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to a report published by Leadership on September 30, Wike said his ability to mobilise support for Tinubu in the FCT would be a measure of whether he should continue to occupy the ministerial position.
Wike Links Political Performance to His Position
Speaking at the gathering, Wike said he would regard an electoral defeat for Tinubu in the FCT and Rivers State as a reason to leave office.
“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
The declaration places his political mobilisation efforts ahead of the election alongside his continued role in the FCT administration.
Wike has remained a prominent figure in discussions about political alliances and support for Tinubu, despite his affiliation with the PDP.
Campaign Mobilisation in the FCT
At the meeting, Wike discussed plans to mobilise political support across party lines in the FCT.
He also expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election bid and identified former FCT Senator Philip Aduda as his preferred candidate for the Senate.
