President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio has called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to national unity, mutual respect and the country’s future as Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.

In a goodwill message issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians at home and abroad, describing the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the country’s shared history and aspirations.

He described Nigeria as “our destiny, our duty, our future,” urging citizens to remain committed to building a stronger and more cohesive nation.

Akpabio Reflects on Nigeria’s Independence

Akpabio said Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960, represented the fulfilment of the aspirations of generations who fought for freedom, self-government and the right to determine the country’s future.

He noted that the national flag remained an enduring symbol of those aspirations and the responsibilities that accompany nationhood.

“Sixty-six years ago, our national flag rose to proclaim the birth of an independent Nigeria. With it rose the hopes of millions: the hope of freedom, the dignity of self-government and the conviction that we could shape our own destiny,” he said in the message provided for this report.

The Senate President added that the promise represented by independence remained relevant to the country’s development.

Tribute to Founding Fathers

Akpabio also honoured Nigeria’s founding fathers and generations of citizens whose contributions helped shape the country.

He urged Nigerians to recognise the sacrifices made by those who worked towards independence and to sustain the effort to build a nation capable of providing opportunities for its people.

His message comes as the country marks another anniversary amid national conversations about economic hardship, insecurity, governance and the need for stronger public institutions.
