POLITICS | ANTI-CORRUPTION | CAMPAIGN FINANCE
A prominent Ogun State politician, Adekunle Shomorin, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), requesting an investigation into 119 vehicles reportedly donated to the campaign of All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.
According to a report by Tribune Online published on October 2, 2026, Shomorin’s petition, dated September 30, asks the anti-graft agency to investigate the identities of the donors, ownership of the vehicles, their acquisition and valuation, and the sources of funds used to obtain them.
The petition also asks the EFCC to examine whether the reported donations complied with relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022.
The request is an allegation and a call for investigation; it does not establish that any offence has occurred.
Petition Seeks Investigation Into Vehicle Donations
Shomorin is asking the commission to establish who provided the vehicles, how they were acquired and what they were worth.
The petition also raises questions about whether the funding and transfer of the vehicles complied with applicable financial and electoral regulations.
Campaign donations can involve substantial resources, making disclosure and compliance with relevant laws important to electoral transparency.
EFCC Yet to Establish Any Wrongdoing Through the Petition
A petition requesting an investigation is not equivalent to a finding of misconduct.
Any determination of wrongdoing would depend on the evidence obtained by investigators, the applicable legal provisions and any response from the individuals or organisations concerned.
The key issue is whether the EFCC will investigate the claims and what, if anything, the evidence establishes about the reported donations.
As of the reports cited here, the petitioner’s allegations should remain clearly distinguished from any official findings. A response from Adeola’s campaign or the EFCC should be included if obtained before publication.
