The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, from 2027.
The proposed centre is expected to enable eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit for the examination without travelling to Nigeria specifically for the UTME.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the plan following discussions during a visit to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.
The examination body said the initiative is intended to expand access to Nigerian tertiary education for citizens in the diaspora and reduce the logistical and financial burden associated with travelling to Nigeria to take the examination.
JAMB has not indicated that UTME will cease to be conducted in Nigeria. Rather, the Ottawa centre is being planned as an additional examination location for eligible candidates abroad.
The move reflects the board’s broader efforts to expand access to the Nigerian admissions system and accommodate prospective students outside the country.
