Luka Modrić has paid tribute to Lionel Messi following the Argentine superstar’s emotional farewell from international football, describing him as a “unique” player whose career deserves the highest respect.
Modrić said Messi’s decision to step away from Argentina duty was a personal choice that should be respected, while highlighting the extraordinary achievements the forward delivered for his country.
“It’s a pity that he’s retiring, but it’s his decision and we have to respect it,” Modrić said.
The Croatia captain also pointed to Messi’s greatest achievement with Argentina — winning the World Cup he had long pursued.
“He has done something incredible with the national team, he won the World Cup that he wanted and he’s one of the best players in the world,” Modrić said.
For Modrić, however, admiration for Messi exists alongside years of competitive pain.
The Croatian midfielder acknowledged that facing Messi for both Croatia and Real Madrid had often been difficult, but said watching the Argentine play remained a privilege.
“Watching Messi was a great pleasure. But playing against him both for the national team and at Real Madrid caused me a lot of pain,” he said jokingly.
Messi’s farewell marks the closing of a remarkable international chapter.
The 39-year-old concluded his 21-year Argentina career in an emotional ceremony in Buenos Aires after his final international appearance against Benin. He scored his 126th international goal and provided two assists as Argentina won 3–0 before more than 85,000 supporters at the Monumental.
Messi leaves international football as Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer, having guided the country to Copa América triumphs and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
For a generation of players who competed against him, his departure represents the end of one of football’s defining eras.
Modrić, himself one of the most decorated midfielders of his generation, summed up the sentiment simply by wishing Messi well for what comes next.
“It’s a pleasure watching him play because he is a unique player. I wish him luck.”
