The Federal Government has announced a compressed natural gas-powered transportation initiative targeting university communities as part of efforts to reduce the burden of rising commuting costs on students and other campus users.

The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) announced the programme during an awareness campaign at Bayero University, Kano (BUK).

The initiative, known as Compressed Natural Gas – Special Palliative Relief on University Transportation (CNG-SPROUT), is designed to provide more affordable and environmentally friendly transport options for students.

Executive Chairman of Pi-CNG & EV, Ismaeel Ahmed, was represented at the event by Louisa Afu, the initiative’s Manager of Investor Relations.

The programme is intended to expand access to CNG-powered transportation within and around participating university campuses. Plans outlined for the broader initiative include CNG refuelling infrastructure, vehicle conversion centres and the phased deployment of buses and tricycles.

The initiative comes as transportation expenses continue to place pressure on students, many of whom depend on public transport to commute between their accommodation, campuses and other essential destinations.

Lower transport costs could help students manage their daily expenses, while cleaner vehicle technology may offer environmental benefits compared with conventional petrol-powered transport.

However, the practical impact will depend on the number of participating institutions, the availability of vehicles, the routes covered and the fares charged to passengers.

The government’s challenge will be to move beyond awareness campaigns and ensure that the infrastructure and transport services become accessible to students who need them most.

If implemented effectively, CNG-SPROUT could become part of a broader effort to improve campus mobility while reducing the cost of accessing higher education.
