Several supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Benue State have reportedly sustained injuries in a road accident while travelling to Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, for a political rally in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The accident occurred on Saturday within Lafia town as the supporters were making their way to the APC’s North-Central mega rally ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to reports, the vehicles conveying the supporters were involved in a collision along the Government House route.

Daniel Ihomun, publicity secretary of the Austin Agada-led APC faction in Benue State, confirmed the incident.

Ihomun said the accident involved buses carrying party supporters from Benue and that those injured were taken to hospital for medical attention.

He reportedly confirmed that no deaths were recorded in the incident.

Supporters were travelling for APC rally

The affected supporters were travelling to attend a rally organised to demonstrate support for Tinubu and Shettima’s expected re-election bid in 2027.

The event forms part of the ruling party’s political mobilisation in the North-Central region, where APC stakeholders have been organising activities to consolidate support for the administration.

The supporters were reportedly aligned with the faction of the Benue APC loyal to Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

The incident highlights the potential road-safety risks associated with large-scale political mobilisation, particularly when groups travel in convoys or buses to events outside their home states.

Circumstances of collision remain unclear

Details surrounding the precise cause of the accident had not been established in the information available at the time of reporting.

It was also unclear how many people were injured or whether any of them sustained serious injuries.

The confirmation that the injured were taken to hospital offered some information about the immediate response, but further details from relevant authorities would be needed to establish the full circumstances.

Road accidents involving political supporters can disrupt planned activities and raise concerns about travel arrangements, vehicle safety and the management of convoys.

Further information from the police or other relevant agencies would help clarify the circumstances of the collision and the condition of those affected.
