The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has accused President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining Northern voters ahead of the 2027 general election.
Baba-Ahmed made the remarks on Tuesday during an appearance on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, where he criticised the ruling party’s approach to Northern Nigeria and questioned its expectations of electoral support from the region.
The PRP chairman argued that political leaders campaigning for Tinubu’s re-election should consider the concerns of voters across Northern states rather than assume that the region would automatically support the President.
He also alleged that the APC could attempt to influence voters through widespread vote-buying during the forthcoming election, warning that Northern voters would resist what he described as efforts to undermine their interests.
Baba-Ahmed maintained that voters in the region had the right to demand accountability from political leaders and make independent choices at the ballot box.
His comments come as political parties and their supporters intensify discussions about the likely voting patterns of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Northern Nigeria remains a major electoral constituency because of its population and the number of states across the region. However, political preferences vary across communities, parties and individual voters.
The APC has yet to be established as having engaged in the alleged conduct simply because of Baba-Ahmed’s accusations. The claims about vote-buying and the treatment of Northern voters remain allegations and should be assessed against verifiable evidence.
As the election approaches, debates over economic hardship, insecurity, governance and political representation are expected to shape campaigns and voter engagement across the country.
