Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has congratulated former governor and ex-Minister of Defence, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on his 70th birthday, praising his political influence and contributions to the development of Kano State and Nigeria.
Yusuf described the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on Kwankwaso’s decades of public service, leadership and impact on the political landscape of Kano.
In his congratulatory message, the governor acknowledged the former governor’s role in shaping political participation and influencing the direction of governance in the state.
He noted that Kwankwaso’s years in public office had contributed to the development of Kano and provided opportunities for many people to participate in politics and public administration.
Yusuf also recognised the significance of Kwankwaso’s political journey, which has included service in the legislature, the Federal Executive Council and two terms as governor of Kano State, alongside his involvement in national politics.
The governor wished the former minister good health, long life and renewed strength to continue contributing to the development of the state and the country.
Kwankwaso turned 70 on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at a time when political alignments are increasingly focused on the 2027 general elections.
His birthday has attracted congratulatory messages from political figures across party lines, including Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, who described Kwankwaso as a respected elder brother and partner in public service.
Kwankwaso remains a major political figure in Kano, where his influence has shaped electoral contests and political mobilisation over several years. His political movement has maintained a substantial following, particularly among supporters who identify with his approach to grassroots engagement and public leadership.
Yusuf’s tribute comes against the backdrop of political realignments ahead of 2027. The governor and Kwankwaso, who were previously allies within the New Nigeria Peoples Party, have moved onto different political paths, with Yusuf aligning with the All Progressives Congress and Kwankwaso joining the NDC.
Despite those differences, the governor’s birthday message acknowledged Kwankwaso’s role in the state’s political development and his continuing relevance in national affairs.
