The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has claimed that opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Accord Party, are backing President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027.

Yilwatda made the claim on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in Abuja after meeting with President Tinubu alongside the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari.

The meeting was convened to brief the President on preparations for the ruling party’s presidential campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking after the meeting, the APC chairman presented the reported support from opposition parties as evidence of growing political backing for Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

He argued that the development was significant because some of the parties he referenced had previously contested elections against the APC.

The claim, however, should be understood as Yilwatda’s account of the political situation. The extent of support within the named parties, including whether their leaderships have formally endorsed Tinubu’s re-election, requires separate confirmation. A claim by the APC chairman does not, by itself, establish that every party member or the parties’ entire structures have adopted the ruling party’s position.

The development comes as Nigeria’s major political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with alliances, defections and negotiations expected to influence the contest.

The APC has continued to promote Tinubu’s economic reforms and infrastructure projects as key elements of its case for another term. Opposition parties and political figures, meanwhile, have raised concerns about economic hardship, insecurity and the effects of government policies.

The ruling party is also preparing to formally launch its presidential campaign in Kaduna on October 24, according to Yilwatda’s account of the preparations.

Whether the reported alliances translate into formal endorsements, coordinated campaign structures and electoral support will become clearer as the election approaches.

For now, the APC chairman’s statement adds another dimension to the political calculations surrounding Tinubu’s re-election bid, particularly as parties assess their prospects and potential partnerships across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
