A viral video showing a group of youths chanting for AK-47 rifles and making threats against people in Enugu and Jos has sparked widespread concern, with calls for security agencies to investigate the footage and establish the identities of those involved.

The recording, which has circulated on social media, appears to show the youths jogging in formation while singing about obtaining firearms and travelling to the two cities to attack people they describe as “infidels”.

The footage has drawn particular attention because the chants reportedly reference Sunday worship services and threaten violence against people in the southeastern city of Enugu and Jos, the capital of Plateau State.

The individuals have been described in media reports as allegedly associated with Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), popularly known as Izala, an Islamic movement in Nigeria.

However, their identities, the circumstances surrounding the recording and their alleged organisational affiliation have not been independently established.

Video Raises Security Concerns

In the footage, a male voice reportedly leads the group in chants demanding AK-47 rifles and referring to travelling to Enugu, where the speaker threatens to attack people during Sunday worship.

The speaker subsequently mentions Jos and makes further threats against people described as non-believers.

The language used in the recording has raised concerns about the possibility of religiously motivated violence, particularly given the references to specific locations and worshippers.

Enugu and Jos are among the Nigerian cities where concerns over security, religious tensions and communal violence have periodically featured in public discussions.

The video has prompted calls for the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and other relevant authorities to investigate the incident.

Those calling for an investigation have urged the authorities to establish when and where the footage was recorded, identify the people involved and determine whether the threats represent a credible security risk.

Calls for Verification and Accountability

The reported affiliation of the individuals with JIBWIS has also generated calls for clarification from the organisation’s leadership.

Establishing the identity of those involved is essential to determining whether they are members of the organisation and whether the statements were made during an authorised activity.

The appearance of individuals in clothing associated with a particular organisation does not, by itself, establish that the organisation endorsed their conduct.

The threats captured in the footage nevertheless warrant serious attention because of their explicit references to firearms and attacks on people in identifiable locations.

Security agencies would need to establish the authenticity and context of the recording before drawing conclusions about the intentions of those involved or the extent of any potential threat.

The incident also highlights the importance of confronting incitement to violence without attributing the actions of individuals to entire religious communities.

As of the information available in the reports reviewed, the identities of those involved and the circumstances surrounding the recording remain matters requiring verification.
