The Kaduna State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general election and support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The party’s state publicity secretary, Mohammed Sani Haruna, made the appeal while addressing journalists in Kaduna following the APC’s presidential campaign flag-off rally in the state on Saturday.

Haruna argued that the turnout at the event demonstrated the ruling party’s mobilisation capacity and growing support for Tinubu in Northern Nigeria.

The APC spokesperson also claimed that more than one million people attended the rally and expressed confidence that Kaduna State could deliver at least two million votes for the President in the 2027 election.

The crowd estimate and projected vote total are claims made by the party and should not be interpreted as independently verified figures or a guarantee of the eventual election result.

APC Questions Atiku’s Electoral Prospects

Haruna argued that Atiku should reconsider his presidential ambition in light of what the Kaduna APC described as the support demonstrated for Tinubu during the campaign event.

He urged the former vice-president to work with the incumbent President, presenting such cooperation as an opportunity to advance national political interests.

The APC spokesperson also referred to Tinubu’s past political relationships with Atiku and other Northern political figures as part of his argument for supporting the President.

The call adds to the increasingly competitive political exchanges expected ahead of the 2027 general election, in which Tinubu is seeking another term while opposition figures are working to build alternative political coalitions.

Atiku has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics and has criticised several policies of the Tinubu administration.

Kaduna’s Strategic Importance

Kaduna occupies an important position in Northern Nigerian politics, making it a significant location for the APC’s efforts to consolidate support ahead of the next presidential election.

The ruling party’s campaign activities in the state are part of a broader mobilisation strategy intended to bring party leaders, elected officials and grassroots supporters together.

However, the APC’s assessment of the rally does not establish the voting intentions of Kaduna residents or Northern Nigerians more broadly.

Actual electoral support will be determined at the ballot box, with voters making individual decisions based on candidates, party platforms, government performance and other political and economic considerations.

The exchange between the Kaduna APC and Atiku highlights the increasingly direct appeals and challenges that are likely to shape political discourse as the 2027 election approaches.
