In a major boost for Nigeria’s humanitarian efforts, the World Bank has approved a $300 million loan aimed at helping around 7.4 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and their host communities in the northern part of the country. The funding, approved on August 7, 2025, seeks to enhance resilience and improve access to critical services for those affected by displacement.

The announcement came through a statement released on Monday, underscoring the World Bank’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations grappling with the challenges of prolonged displacement.

Mathew Verghis, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, expressed optimism about the initiative’s impact. “We are pleased to support this program, which offers sustainable solutions to the development challenges linked to long-term displacement,” he said.

This financing package is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening social infrastructure and providing essential services to both displaced persons and the communities that host them, marking a significant step toward addressing one of Nigeria’s most pressing humanitarian crises.
