The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a temporary change in leadership as Professor Mahmood Yakubu formally handed over to May Agbamuche, who now takes charge as the Acting National Chairman of the commission.

The handover took place on Tuesday during an official meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at INEC headquarters in Abuja.

May Agbamuche, currently the longest-serving National Commissioner at INEC, steps into the role to ensure administrative continuity pending the appointment of a substantive chairman by the Federal Government.

In his remarks during the session, Professor Yakubu expressed confidence in Agbamuche’s experience and leadership capacity, urging all commissioners and directors within the commission to give her their full cooperation and support.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining INEC’s operational efficiency during the transition period, particularly as the commission continues preparations for upcoming elections and reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.

Agbamuche’s appointment as Acting Chairman comes at a critical time when INEC is under renewed public attention over election credibility and institutional transparency. Her leadership is expected to sustain the momentum of ongoing electoral initiatives and reforms across the country.
