The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elective convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, witnessed unexpected political drama on Saturday as a faction of the party loyal to former President Goodluck Jonathan staged a visible show of support for his possible return to national politics.

The group, made up of PDP members pushing for Jonathan’s comeback bid, arrived at the venue carrying banners and flags embossed with the former president’s image. Their display also promoted Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed as Jonathan’s proposed running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

Speculation surrounding Jonathan’s potential candidacy has persisted for months, despite his silence on the matter. Associates close to him have repeatedly suggested that the former president is considering joining the race if internal arrangements within the party favour his return.

The atmosphere at the convention had already been stirred on Friday when posters featuring Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde appeared around the venue, fuelling further conversation about the PDP’s emerging power blocs ahead of the 2027 contest.
