Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, a distinguished historian, educator, and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has passed away at the age of 64 following a brief illness. He also served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, leaving a lasting legacy in academia and public service.

The news of his death was confirmed by his younger brother, Olawale Oyeweso, who described the loss as “with great sadness,” highlighting the profound influence Professor Oyeweso had on students, colleagues, and political associates throughout his career.

Governor Adeleke’s Special Assistant on Digital Media, Azeez Badmus, also took to X (formerly Twitter) to mourn the historian, calling him “an illustrious son of Ede, Osun State, and Nigeria” and describing his passing as “a sad loss.”

Professor Oyeweso is survived by his wife, children, and extended family. According to the family, his burial will take place today in his hometown of Ede at 4 p.m., following Solat Asr prayers. In their statement, they prayed for Allah’s mercy, asking that he be granted Aljannah Firdaus and that loved ones find comfort during this difficult period.
