The Labour Party (LP) has further strengthened its presence in the Abia State House of Assembly following the defection of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker, Lewis Chinemerem Obianyi.
Obianyi, who represents Ukwa East State Constituency, formally announced his defection during plenary on Tuesday, where he submitted a letter resigning his membership of the PDP and declaring allegiance to the LP.
The lawmaker is widely regarded as one of the most vocal members of the Assembly and has sponsored several bills since his inauguration.
A close associate of Obianyi said internal crises within the PDP played a significant role in his decision to leave the party, adding that the lawmaker believes the Labour Party offers a more stable and progressive platform.
The defection further consolidates the Labour Party’s dominance in the Abia Assembly and underscores the ongoing realignments within the state’s political landscape.
