The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed February 21, 2026, for bye-elections in the Ahoada East II and Khana II state constituencies of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The electoral body announced the decision on Monday following an extraordinary meeting at which it also assessed preparations for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, slated for the same date.

INEC explained that the exercise is in line with Section 116 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates the commission to conduct bye-elections to fill vacancies in state legislative houses.

The Ahoada East II seat became vacant after the resignation of its former occupant, while the Khana II constituency was left without representation following the death of its lawmaker. The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has formally communicated both vacancies to the commission.

INEC said further details on the timetable and guidelines for the bye-elections will be made public in due course.
