The Ashanti Regional Police Command has secured the conviction of a Nigerian woman for inflicting harm on her nine-year-old daughter at Duase, near Kenyasi, in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

The woman, identified as 34-year-old Beauty Alakwe, was on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, sentenced by a Circuit Court sitting in Tafo, Kumasi, to 15 months’ imprisonment with hard labour and fined 6,000 Ghanaian cedis.

She was subsequently remanded to the Central Prisons in Kumasi after failing to pay the fine.

The case dates back to November 22, when a resident of the community, with the support of the area’s Assembly Member, reported the alleged assault to the authorities.

Investigations were conducted by the Kenyasi District Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) under the Tafo-Pankrono Police Division.

In its ruling, the court further directed the Department of Social Welfare in Mamponteng to work with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to ensure the welfare of the victim and her nine-year-old brother, and to facilitate their reunification with their family in Nigeria.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command commended members of the public for their cooperation during the investigation and reiterated its opposition to mob justice, while reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding children and other vulnerable persons.
