The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday commenced proceedings in a high-profile corruption case involving a former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and another defendant.
At the arraignment, the trio formally denied all allegations levelled against them by the Federal Government, pleading not guilty to a 16-count charge linked to alleged money laundering and related financial offences.
Prosecutors told the court that the defendants are accused of engaging in transactions involving funds suspected to be unlawfully acquired and subsequently concealed, in breach of Nigeria’s anti-money laundering regulations.
Following the plea-taking, the presiding judge adjourned the matter to enable further legal processes, including consideration of bail and the scheduling of trial dates.
The case has attracted widespread attention due to Malami’s former role as Nigeria’s chief law officer, with observers closely watching how the prosecution unfolds in the coming weeks.
