The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, identified as Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, in connection with the killing of his girlfriend in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, January 11, 2026. He said the suspect allegedly killed his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother, following suspicions of infidelity.

According to the police, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, arrested Chibuike on January 7, 2026, after an investigation into the incident, which reportedly occurred on December 9, 2025.

Ikenga dismissed circulating claims that the victim was killed by individuals to whom the suspect owed money, describing such reports as false and misleading. He said preliminary findings showed that the crime was committed by the suspect, who later attempted to divert attention from himself.

Police said the suspect admitted to attacking the victim during a late-night confrontation, an act that led to her death. Investigators also disclosed that the suspect allegedly planted a fake letter claiming he had been kidnapped by creditors in an attempt to mislead authorities and evade arrest.

As part of ongoing investigations, detectives have visited the mortuary where the victim’s body was deposited, while efforts continue to conclude the case file.

The police noted that the incident has sparked public outrage and renewed discussions around domestic violence and relationship-related crimes in the community. The command urged residents to seek peaceful and lawful ways of resolving disputes and to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies.

SP Ikenga said the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
