A Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3) student of Government Science and Technical College (GSTC), Potiskum, Yobe State, has died following an alleged assault by fellow students over an accusation of phone theft.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, under circumstances that are still being investigated. According to Daily Trust, the student was attacked by some of his classmates after he was accused of stealing a mobile phone.

A social media user, Yahaya Abubakar Sk, who shared a photograph of the deceased, claimed the student died after being severely beaten by his peers. The student was said to have been buried later the same day in his hometown, Gadaka, in Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The Yobe State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of death. The police spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, told Daily Trust that the command was aware of the case and had commenced inquiries.

“Yes, we are aware of the incident. Investigation is currently ongoing to ascertain what led to the death of the student,” Abdulkarim said.

A teacher at the school, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the school authorities had handed over some students suspected to be involved in the incident to the police for further investigation.

“The school authorities have handed over the suspected students to the police, and investigation is ongoing,” the source said.

The incident has sparked concern over bullying and student-on-student violence in secondary schools, with calls for stricter supervision and stronger disciplinary measures to prevent similar tragedies.
