The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced new dates for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, shifting the presidential and National Assembly polls to January 16, 2027.
In a statement released on Thursday, the electoral body disclosed that governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will now be conducted on February 6, 2027.
The revised schedule replaces the earlier timetable which fixed the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly polls were scheduled for March 6, 2027.
INEC explained that the adjustment followed recent electoral reforms, including the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the new Electoral Act, 2026.
The commission noted that the updated timetable is aimed at ensuring adequate preparation time and full compliance with provisions contained in the newly signed electoral law.
Further details regarding political party primaries and other pre-election activities are expected to be released by the commission in due course.
