Activist challenges police action after arrests linked to Elumelu divorce rumours

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised the Nigeria Police Force over the arrest of three individuals linked to viral reports about businessman Tony Elumelu’s alleged divorce.

Sowore argued that publishing claims about a public figure’s marital status should not attract criminal sanctions, describing the arrests as unjustified and calling for the suspects’ release.

The arrests followed a complaint by United Bank for Africa, which described the divorce reports as false and defamatory, confirming that three suspects were detained as investigations continue.

The case is likely to intensify debate over free speech, defamation laws, and police powers in Nigeria’s digital space.
