Governor Peter Mbah’s administration pushes bold electricity plan aimed at industrial growth and economic expansion.

The Enugu State Government has unveiled an ambitious plan to build a massive 660-megawatt coal-fired power plant, a move officials say could dramatically transform electricity supply and industrial growth in the state.

Governor Peter Mbah disclosed that construction of the project is expected to commence in July, with authorities projecting completion within 24 months as part of the administration’s aggressive economic expansion agenda.

The announcement has already generated intense debate online, especially amid global concerns over environmental pollution and climate change linked to coal-powered energy projects. While supporters argue Nigeria desperately needs stable electricity, critics are questioning the environmental implications of reviving coal dependency.

According to the governor, the project became possible following recent constitutional and electricity reforms allowing states to independently generate and distribute power. Enugu is now positioning itself as one of the first states aggressively moving into subnational electricity generation.

The development is also tied to Mbah’s broader vision of expanding Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. State officials insist reliable electricity will unlock manufacturing, technology investment, job creation, and business growth across the region.

Meanwhile, members of the Organised Private Sector Nigeria reportedly endorsed the governor for a second term, praising his administration’s infrastructure push and business-friendly reforms.
