Lawmakers Approve Immediate Suspension Amid Explosive Corruption Allegations

Fresh political tension has erupted in Benue State after the State House of Assembly approved the suspension of the Auditor-General for Local Governments, Dr. Abraham Gberindyer, over an alleged N4.6 billion fraud scandal.

The decision followed a formal communication from Governor Hyacinth Alia, who reportedly informed lawmakers of serious allegations of financial misconduct and corruption linked to the Auditor-General’s office. The Assembly moved swiftly during Thursday’s plenary to approve the suspension pending investigation.

According to reports, the controversial N4.6 billion allegedly involved funds meant for local government operations across Benue State. Earlier investigations by the EFCC had already led to the detention and questioning of several officials and consultants connected to the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The latest suspension has now intensified public concern over accountability and financial transparency within the state’s local government system. Many residents have expressed anger online, demanding full prosecution of anyone found guilty.

Political analysts say the scandal could further increase pressure on the Benue government as anti-corruption agencies continue widening investigations into the alleged diversion of public funds.

Meanwhile, the Assembly insisted the suspension was necessary to allow a transparent and unhindered investigation into the allegations shaking the state.
