Seven visitors who arrived for Eid-el-Kabir celebrations were among those killed in the attack on Dangulbi community in Sokoto State.
No fewer than 17 people have been killed after heavily armed bandits attacked Dangulbi community in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Among those reportedly killed were seven visitors who had travelled to the community to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with their families.
Residents said the attackers, who arrived in large numbers on motorcycles, invaded the community on Sunday morning and opened fire indiscriminately. The assault forced many residents to flee into nearby forests while shops were looted during the attack.
According to local accounts, the gunmen were believed to have moved through communities linking Zamfara and Sokoto states before launching the assault on Dangulbi.
The incident adds to growing concerns over persistent insecurity affecting rural communities in parts of northern Nigeria, where residents continue to face recurring attacks from armed groups.
At the time of reporting, affected residents were still assessing the scale of the destruction caused by the raid.
