The former presidential candidate urged Nigerians not to associate criminality with any ethnic group.

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned ethnic profiling in Nigeria, insisting that criminality should never be tied to any tribe or ethnic nationality.

Obi made the remark while reacting to growing narratives linking criminal activities to particular ethnic groups, including the Fulani community. According to him, Nigerians should resist the tendency to define entire communities by the actions of individuals involved in criminal acts.

In a statement shared on his verified X account, Obi said he had personally experienced ethnic stereotypes as an Igbo man, noting that many Nigerians had at different times faced judgment based solely on their ethnic background.

He stated that “crime has no ethnicity,” adding that criminals should be treated strictly as individuals accountable under the law rather than representatives of any ethnic or regional group.

The comments come at a time when debates around insecurity, communal tension, and ethnic narratives continue to shape public discourse across different parts of the country.

Obi urged Nigerians to reject collective blame and focus instead on lawful prosecution of offenders irrespective of ethnic identity.
