The Federal High Court in Lagos has declared unlawful the National Assembly’s N110 billion expenditure on Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and support allowances for lawmakers.
The court ruled that the spending, which covered vehicle procurement and support allowances for legislators, breached procurement laws, constitutional provisions and public accountability obligations.
According to reports on the judgment, the disputed expenditure included N40 billion allocated for vehicles for lawmakers and N70 billion in support allowances for newly elected members of the National Assembly.
The ruling places renewed attention on public spending priorities and the legal standards governing the use of public funds by government institutions, particularly at a time of continuing economic pressure across the country.
The judgment also reinforces ongoing scrutiny surrounding transparency and compliance with procurement procedures in public sector spending.
The Federal High Court held that the expenditure was inconsistent with constitutional and procurement requirements, declaring the scheme unlawful.
