Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring his intention to contest the Jigawa South-West Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections.
Former Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has formally defected from the ruling APC to the PDP in Jigawa State, marking a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abba announced his defection during a political gathering held in Bamaina, the hometown of former Jigawa State Governor and PDP chieftain Sule Lamido, where he was received by party leaders, supporters and loyalists.
Speaking at the event, Abba said he chose to leave the APC because he believes the PDP offers him the best platform to provide effective representation for the people of Jigawa South-West in the National Assembly.
He also formally declared his ambition to contest the senatorial seat in the 2027 elections, promising to focus on security, agriculture, youth empowerment and economic development if elected.
Welcoming Abba into the PDP, former Governor Sule Lamido described the ex-police chief’s defection as a major political gain for the party, expressing confidence that it would strengthen the PDP’s position in Jigawa State ahead of the next general elections.
The Jigawa State PDP Chairman, Babandi Gumel, also said party structures had been mobilised to integrate Abba and his supporters into the party, while PDP governorship candidate Mustapha Lamido described the development as another boost to the opposition’s preparations for 2027.
Addressing supporters, Abba said his priority would be to ensure stronger representation for his constituents if elected to the Senate.
“I have left the APC for the PDP because I believe this is the platform to deliver real representation for Jigawa South-West,” he said.
He added that he would champion policies aimed at improving security, empowering young people, supporting farmers and expanding economic opportunities across the district.
Abba’s defection adds to the growing wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as major parties continue to attract prominent figures in preparation for what is expected to be another fiercely contested electoral cycle. Political observers say the move could reshape the contest for the Jigawa South-West Senatorial seat in the months ahead.
