A member of the United States House of Representatives, Riley Moore, says the administration of President Donald Trump will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of a transparent, credible and peaceful electoral process in Africa’s most populous nation.
The United States has signalled that Nigeria’s 2027 general elections will receive close attention from Washington, with U.S. Congressman Riley Moore saying President Donald Trump’s administration intends to closely observe how the electoral process is conducted.
Moore made the remarks during an interview while discussing U.S.–Nigeria relations, democratic governance and the need for credible elections in Nigeria ahead of the next electoral cycle.
According to Moore, the Trump administration considers Nigeria a strategically important partner in Africa and believes that credible elections are essential for the country’s democratic stability and regional influence.
He stated that both he and the U.S. administration would be “paying close attention” to the conduct of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, expressing hope that the process would reflect transparency, accountability and respect for the will of the electorate.
The congressman also noted that democratic institutions remain central to strengthening bilateral relations between both countries and encouraging long-term political and economic stability.
Moore has been actively involved in U.S. congressional discussions relating to Nigeria, particularly on issues of security, religious freedom and governance.
Earlier this year, he presented recommendations to the White House on Nigeria and has repeatedly advocated stronger U.S. engagement on developments affecting the country.
Nigeria is expected to hold its next general elections in January and February 2027, with political parties already intensifying preparations and coalition-building ahead of the polls.
Moore did not announce any specific U.S. intervention or policy change but reiterated that Washington would continue supporting democratic principles and closely observing developments leading to the elections.
Nigerian authorities have not officially responded to the congressman’s remarks as of the time of filing this report.
With political activities gradually gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Moore’s comments underscore growing international interest in Nigeria’s democratic process. Observers expect election preparations, transparency measures and institutional reforms to remain under both domestic and international scrutiny in the months ahead.
