Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, has firmly denied widespread reports claiming she filed for divorce, describing the story as fabricated and urging the public to disregard what she called a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation about her family. Her lawyer also dismissed the reports, saying no divorce petition had been filed.

The family of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu has moved swiftly to counter reports alleging that his wife, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, had filed for divorce.

In a strongly worded rebuttal issued through her legal representatives, Uchechi described the reports as false, malicious and designed to create unnecessary controversy around her family while her husband remains in detention.

The divorce rumours gained traction on social media after online publications claimed that Uchechi had initiated proceedings to dissolve her marriage.

However, her lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, rejected the claims, stating that Uchechi personally confirmed she had never filed any divorce petition against her husband.

According to the statement, she expressed shock over the reports and insisted that the claims were entirely fabricated.

The legal team urged media organisations and social media users to refrain from circulating unverified information capable of misleading the public.

Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention while legal proceedings relating to terrorism and other charges continue before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

His prolonged detention has kept his family in the public spotlight, with periodic speculation often circulating on social media regarding his personal life and legal battles.

The latest denial comes amid renewed public interest in Kanu’s case and increasing online misinformation surrounding prominent political figures.

Ejimakor called on the public to disregard the reports, maintaining that they lacked any factual basis.

He said Uchechi remains committed to supporting her husband and cautioned against the deliberate spread of false narratives capable of distracting from the ongoing legal process.

The swift rebuttal has effectively challenged the online claims, although the rumours continue to circulate across some social media platforms. With no court filing or official record supporting the divorce allegation, the family’s legal team has urged the public to rely only on verified information concerning the Kanu family.
