Imo State Governor and Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, says the governors of the region have resolved to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, citing infrastructure projects and federal interventions across the South-East.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has said the five governors of the South-East have collectively resolved to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in office during the 2027 presidential election.
Uzodimma, who chairs the South-East Governors’ Forum, made the disclosure during a meeting with the Imo State Council of Elders and the Council of Traditional Rulers at the Government House in Owerri. He attributed the decision to what he described as the Tinubu administration’s commitment to the development of the South-East through infrastructure, security and economic initiatives.
‘We Want to Be Part of Project Nigeria’
According to Uzodimma, the governors reviewed developments across the region and concluded that supporting the President would be in the South-East’s best interest.
He said the region could no longer ignore visible federal projects and interventions.
“We, the five governors of the South-East, have reviewed all options and decided that we will work with President Bola Tinubu because we want to be part of Project Nigeria,” Uzodimma said.
Governor Cites Federal Projects
The Imo governor said the Tinubu administration had demonstrated commitment to the region through road construction, infrastructure development and other federal initiatives.
He argued that these projects had changed perceptions in parts of the South-East regarding the Federal Government’s commitment to the zone.
Uzodimma added that development, rather than political rhetoric, informed the governors’ position.
Political Significance Ahead of 2027
The statement comes as political alignments continue ahead of the 2027 general election.
The South-East comprises Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, whose governors belong to different political parties.
While Uzodimma asserted that all five governors had resolved to support Tinubu, the individual governors had not, as of the time of reporting, jointly issued a separate communiqué confirming the decision.
Mixed Political Landscape
The South-East has traditionally been a competitive political region with governors elected on different party platforms.
Political analysts say any coordinated endorsement by governors from across party lines could become a significant development ahead of the 2027 elections, although political positions may evolve as campaigns progress.
President Tinubu has intensified consultations with political leaders and stakeholders across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
