The Federal High Court, Abuja, has fixed for hearing a suit seeking an order compelling President Bola Tinubu and other top security officials to provide adequate security for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election.
A legal action has been instituted at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to compel President Bola Tinubu and key security agencies to guarantee the safety and security of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Those listed as defendants include President Tinubu, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant authorities. The court has approved the matter for hearing.
Suit Follows Alleged Security Concerns
According to the suit, the applicants argued that recent developments and comments surrounding Obi’s political engagements have heightened concerns about his personal safety ahead of the 2027 elections.
The case reportedly followed public controversy over remarks attributed to Governor Monday Okpebholo regarding Peter Obi’s security during political visits to Edo State.
What the Plaintiffs Want
The applicants are asking the court to direct the Federal Government and security agencies to:
- Provide maximum security for Peter Obi during his political engagements.
- Ensure his constitutional rights to freedom of movement and association are protected.
- Prevent any act capable of endangering his life or restricting his lawful political activities.
Court to Determine Merits
The Federal High Court has not ruled on the substance of the case. It has only scheduled the matter for hearing.
