Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to focus on addressing Nigeria’s worsening hunger, insecurity, unemployment and economic challenges instead of engaging in political battles with opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku’s remarks came in response to President Tinubu’s recent declaration that he would not relinquish power without a political fight and was prepared to “wrestle” his opponents to the finish line.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the President’s greatest challenge was not the opposition but the record of his administration.
‘Fight Hunger, Not Political Rivals’
According to Atiku, millions of Nigerians are grappling with soaring food prices, inflation, unemployment and persistent insecurity, issues he said deserve the government’s full attention.
He argued that rather than engaging in combative political rhetoric, the administration should prioritize policies that improve the welfare of citizens and restore confidence in the economy.
‘Your Record Is Your Biggest Opponent’
The former Vice President maintained that the Tinubu administration would ultimately be judged by its performance in office.
He said Nigerians would evaluate the government based on its ability to reduce hardship, improve security and create jobs, stressing that elections are won through governance and accountability rather than political bravado.
Political Exchange Ahead of 2027
Atiku’s comments add to the growing exchange of words between the ruling APC and opposition parties as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum.
His statement also follows similar criticism from other opposition parties, including the ADC, which recently urged the President to focus on combating terrorism and insecurity instead of confronting political opponents.
