A coalition of Christian and human rights organisations under the Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria (CYAN) has petitioned United States President Donald Trump, the US Congress and diplomatic missions over the planned retention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima’s Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2027 presidential election.
The coalition said it was raising concerns over what it described as the political and religious implications of retaining the same-faith presidential ticket.
The petition comes as political parties and groups begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 election.
Christian groups raise concerns
CYAN, which describes itself as a coalition of Christian and human rights groups from across Nigeria, expressed concern about the political representation of Christians under a continuation of the Tinubu-Shettima arrangement.
The group appealed to the US administration, Congress and diplomatic missions to pay attention to developments surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 election.
The petition adds an international dimension to an issue that has already generated intense domestic political debate.
Tinubu and Shettima ran on a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 presidential election, an arrangement that attracted controversy before and during the election.
