After a prolonged absence from the Presidential Villa, Senator Ali Ndume has held a private meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging the President to embrace broader consultations in tackling Nigeria’s deepening security and economic challenges. The Borno South lawmaker argued that no leader, regardless of office, can solve the country’s problems alone.

Senator Ali Ndume on Thursday returned to the Presidential Villa for a private audience with President Bola Tinubu, marking the resumption of a relationship that had gone quiet for months.

Emerging from the meeting, the outspoken Borno South senator delivered a message that underscored both support and concern: while expressing confidence in the President’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s challenges, he insisted that meaningful progress would require broader consultation, direct engagement with citizens and a willingness to draw from diverse ideas.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, Ndume disclosed that he personally requested the audience and that President Tinubu granted it immediately.

He revealed that both men agreed to revive regular consultations, with the President suggesting future meetings in a less formal setting where they could freely exchange ideas on national issues.

According to Ndume, discussions centred largely on insecurity, worsening economic hardship and practical strategies for addressing the country’s growing challenges.

The senator stressed that Nigeria’s problems have become too complex for any single individual to solve.

“The President alone cannot solve Nigeria’s problems. He needs people who can share ideas with him because two heads are better than one,” Ndume said.

The meeting comes after months of perceived distance between Ndume and the Presidency.

In 2024, the senator publicly complained that President Tinubu had become difficult to access and suggested that some presidential aides were shielding him from the realities confronting ordinary Nigerians.

Thursday’s meeting appears to signal a thaw in relations, with Ndume saying the President himself expressed a desire for their engagements to continue regularly.

The lawmaker also commended the administration’s renewed military offensives against terrorists and bandits but maintained that sustained action, public communication and collaboration remain essential to overcoming Nigeria’s security crisis.

Ndume disclosed that he advised President Tinubu to communicate more directly with Nigerians instead of relying primarily on government spokespersons.

According to him, the President assured him that the suggestion would receive attention as part of broader efforts to strengthen engagement with citizens.

The senator added that the meeting reinforced his belief that constructive dialogue between elected leaders remains critical to addressing the country’s pressing challenges.

Ndume’s latest meeting with President Tinubu highlights renewed efforts at political engagement within the ruling establishment at a time of heightened concern over insecurity and economic hardship. Whether the revived consultations translate into concrete policy outcomes remains to be seen, but the encounter has reopened a communication channel between the President and one of the National Assembly’s most outspoken voices.
