Ancient Kano tradition returns as Emir Aminu Ado Bayero prepares for Hawan Daushe and Hawan Nassarawa
The ancient city of Kano is once again preparing for one of its most colourful and symbolic cultural displays as the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, gears up for the traditional Sallah horse-riding processions scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
According to palace sources, Emir Bayero is expected to lead the famous Hawan Daushe procession on Thursday, followed by the Hawan Nassarawa outing on Friday as part of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in Kano State.
The horse-riding ceremonies, deeply rooted in Kano’s centuries-old royal tradition, usually attract thousands of residents, cultural enthusiasts, traditional title holders and tourists who troop out in large numbers to witness the spectacle of richly decorated horses, royal guards and cultural performances.
However, this year’s procession is already generating heightened attention due to the lingering emirship tensions and political undercurrents surrounding the Kano royal institution. Security agencies are also expected to maintain heavy presence across strategic areas to prevent any breakdown of law and order during the festivities.
Residents have continued to express excitement ahead of the celebrations, with many describing the Sallah procession as a major symbol of Kano’s cultural pride, Islamic heritage and royal identity.
