Barcelona have completed the signing of Spain midfielder Rodri from Manchester City, bringing one of the world’s leading defensive midfielders to Camp Nou on a contract running until 2030.

The transfer is worth €60 million initially, with performance-related additions taking the potential value to around €75 million, according to multiple reports. Reuters reported the deal at £65.4 million ($88.56 million), while Spanish reports put the structure at €60 million plus variables.

Barcelona confirmed the signing on Tuesday, completing a major move for the 30-year-old midfielder.

Rodri leaves Manchester City after six successful seasons during which he became one of the most influential midfielders in world football.

He won multiple Premier League titles and the Champions League with City and claimed the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

His move to Barcelona also ends a period of speculation over his future in which Real Madrid had reportedly been interested in bringing him back to Spain.

Instead, Rodri has chosen Barcelona.

The signing represents a major statement from the Catalan club as it attempts to strengthen its midfield and build a team capable of challenging for the Champions League.

Rodri’s arrival also gives manager Hansi Flick a player capable of controlling the tempo of matches from deep midfield.

His ability to win possession, dictate play and protect the defence makes him a particularly significant addition to Barcelona’s squad.

The transfer comes after a difficult period with injuries for the Spanish international.

Rodri suffered a serious ACL injury in 2024 and has dealt with further fitness problems, including knee and hamstring issues. Reuters reported that he recently underwent minor back surgery and is expected to miss the start of the season.

That makes his integration into Flick’s team likely to be managed carefully.

Nevertheless, Barcelona view the move as an important piece of their long-term sporting project.

Rodri has already signalled his ambition since arriving in Barcelona, saying he wants to compete for the Champions League and every available trophy.

For Manchester City, the transfer marks the departure of a player who became central to Pep Guardiola’s most successful teams.

Rodri’s influence was particularly evident in City’s control-based style, where his positioning and passing provided the foundation for attacks while shielding the defence.

Barcelona are now hoping he can provide a similar influence in Spain.

The agreement runs until June 2030, giving the club a long-term midfield cornerstone as it attempts to build a squad capable of dominating domestically and competing more consistently in Europe.
