Afrobeats superstar Davido has defended his decision to use his global platform to spotlight Nigeria’s insecurity, saying he refuses to remain silent while children continue to be abducted across the country. The award-winning singer said protecting lives is more important than protecting the country’s image.
Nigerian music star Davido has explained why he continues to speak publicly about insecurity in Nigeria, insisting that the safety of citizens should take precedence over concerns about the country’s international reputation.
The singer made the remarks while reflecting on his decision to highlight the plight of abducted Nigerian children during activities surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he wore a customised outfit bearing the names of kidnapped victims.
According to Davido, many people are reluctant to discuss Nigeria’s security challenges because they fear such conversations could damage the country’s image abroad.
Rejecting that view, the singer said:
“A lot of people don’t really want to talk about what goes on in my country simply because they want to protect the image. But there’s no image to protect if little kids are being kidnapped.”
He added that he deliberately uses his international platform to draw attention to the realities facing ordinary Nigerians, particularly children and communities affected by insecurity.
Davido’s comments followed widespread attention after he appeared at a FIFA World Cup event wearing clothing displaying the names of children and teachers reportedly abducted by armed groups in Nigeria.
The gesture sparked conversations across social media, with many praising the singer for drawing global attention to insecurity, while others debated whether such issues should be highlighted on international stages.
The award-winning artiste called on fellow entertainers and influential public figures to speak more openly about issues affecting Nigerians rather than remaining silent.
He maintained that raising awareness can help attract greater attention to the country’s security challenges and the need to protect vulnerable communities.
Davido’s remarks have generated widespread discussion online, with supporters describing his comments as a call for greater accountability and public awareness. The singer insists that acknowledging Nigeria’s challenges is an important step toward finding lasting solutions rather than attempting to shield the country’s image from criticism.
