Tinubu’s Chief of Staff says Lagos Assembly controversy nearly destroyed his political career

A fresh political storm has erupted within the All Progressives Congress (APC) after Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, revealed that he almost lost his powerful position because of actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot’s alleged involvement in the controversial impeachment saga surrounding former Lagos Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

Speaking during a meeting with APC supporters, Gbajabiamila disclosed that President Tinubu personally confronted him over intelligence reports allegedly linking Desmond Elliot to the political crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly at the time.

According to him, Tinubu questioned why Elliot — believed to be politically close to Gbajabiamila — was allegedly involved in efforts that destabilised the Assembly during the impeachment controversy. Gbajabiamila said he initially defended Elliot before later discovering disturbing developments surrounding the situation.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives explained that the controversy became so intense that his own name reportedly surfaced in internal political discussions, creating fears that he could lose his position as Chief of Staff to the President. He added that only his long-standing relationship with Tinubu helped calm the situation.

The revelation has triggered fresh conversations about the hidden power struggles inside Lagos politics and the internal tensions within the APC ahead of future political battles. Political observers say the public disclosure exposes how deeply the Obasa impeachment crisis shook influential figures within the ruling party.

Social media reactions exploded shortly after the video surfaced online, with many Nigerians expressing shock that the Assembly crisis nearly consumed one of the most powerful figures in Tinubu’s administration.
