The Federal Government has approved a significant upward review of hazard allowances and other earned benefits for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in federal universities, with the highest annual hazard allowance now set at ₦486,000.
The Federal Government has approved a new remuneration package for non-teaching staff in federal universities, increasing hazard allowances and introducing improvements to several earned benefits.
The approval was conveyed in a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) following an agreement reached between the Federal Government and NASU on June 29, 2026. The revised package takes retrospective effect from January 1, 2026.
Hazard Allowance Increased
Under the new package:
- Staff on CONTISS 1–5 will see their annual laboratory, workshop, studio, clinical and occupational hazard allowance rise from ₦180,000 to ₦243,000.
- Staff on CONTISS 6–15 will receive ₦486,000 annually, up from ₦360,000, representing an increase of ₦126,000.
Other Benefits Also Reviewed
The government also approved increases in responsibility allowances for senior non-teaching officials.
Under the revised structure:
- Registrars and bursars will receive ₦840,000 annually.
- Directors will now earn ₦600,000 annually as responsibility allowance.
- Deputy registrars, deputy bursars and deputy directors will receive ₦480,000 annually.
- Heads of departments and units will receive ₦360,000 annually.
Effective From January 2026
The NSIWC said the revised allowances followed negotiations between the Federal Government and NASU and are intended to improve the welfare of non-academic staff in federal universities.
The circular was addressed to key government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, ministers and heads of federal agencies.
