The Osun State Police Command has released the Secretary to the Osun State Government (SSG), Teslim Igbalaiye, just hours after he was arrested during a police operation in Osogbo over alleged electoral offences ahead of the state’s governorship election.
Igbalaiye’s release was announced on Thursday by Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, who thanked the Inspector-General of Police and the Osun State Commissioner of Police for what he described as a prompt response to public concerns over the detention.
Arrest Sparked Political Tension
The SSG was arrested alongside five other suspects after police operatives reportedly raided his residence in Osogbo. During the operation, officers said they recovered Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), cash and other exhibits, with investigations focusing on alleged vote-buying and electoral misconduct ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The arrest triggered sharp reactions from the Osun State Government and Governor Ademola Adeleke’s campaign team, which questioned the timing of the operation and alleged political intimidation.
Five Others Still Under Investigation
Although Igbalaiye has regained his freedom, reports indicate that five other suspects arrested during the operation remain in police custody as investigations continue. The police have not announced whether charges will be filed against any of the suspects.
The Osun State Police Command has maintained that the operation was intelligence-led and forms part of efforts to ensure a peaceful, credible and violence-free governorship election.
