The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of belonging to the Eiye Confraternity and recovered locally made firearms, ammunition and a battle axe during intelligence-led operations.
The suspect, identified as Okiki Muhammed Adewusi, was arrested as part of the command’s efforts to combat cult-related activities and other violent crimes in the state.
Police said the operations resulted in the recovery of two locally made pistols, three live cartridges and a battle axe.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, a search of the suspect’s residence led to the recovery of one locally made pistol and three live cartridges.
Babaseyi said preliminary investigations indicated that Adewusi had allegedly admitted to being a member of the Eiye Confraternity.
Police Intensify Operations Against Cultism
The arrest forms part of a broader police effort to identify and apprehend individuals suspected of involvement in cult-related violence.
The command said its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Squad carried out intelligence-led operations that resulted in the arrest and recovery of the suspected weapons.
Cult-related violence has remained a security concern in parts of Ogun State and other areas of southern Nigeria, with rival groups sometimes linked to assaults, intimidation and other criminal activities.
Police authorities have repeatedly urged residents to provide credible information that could assist investigations and help prevent violent incidents.
Investigation Continues
The police said investigations were ongoing following the arrest.
Authorities are expected to examine the recovered items and establish whether they are connected to any reported offences. Further investigative steps may also be required to determine whether other individuals were involved.
The recovery of suspected weapons does not, by itself, establish that the suspect used them in a crime. Any allegation against him must be tested through the appropriate legal process.
The command has reiterated its commitment to tackling cultism and other violent crimes, while urging members of the public to cooperate with security agencies.
Adewusi remains a suspect, and the allegation of cult membership has not been established by a court.
