Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has arrived in Jos, Plateau State, ahead of a solidarity visit to communities affected by recent deadly attacks in Mangu Local Government Area.
Obi arrived in Jos on Tuesday and was received by members and leaders of the NDC in the state.
His visit is expected to take him to Mangu, where he will meet victims, families who lost loved ones and community stakeholders affected by the violence.
According to reports, the visit is intended to allow the presidential candidate to personally identify with residents dealing with the aftermath of the attacks, while also drawing attention to the security challenges confronting communities in the area.
Obi is expected to commiserate with families who lost relatives and interact with survivors and community leaders to hear firsthand accounts of the incident.
The visit comes against the backdrop of renewed concerns over insecurity in Plateau State, where attacks on rural communities have repeatedly resulted in deaths, injuries, displacement and destruction of property.
Obi has consistently made insecurity one of the major issues in his political engagements, frequently calling for stronger protection of lives and property and improved support for victims of violence.
The former Anambra State governor is also expected to use the visit to advocate greater government attention to affected communities and stronger measures to prevent further attacks.
The Plateau visit forms part of Obi’s wider political and community engagements ahead of the 2027 general election, during which he has continued to tour different parts of the country and meet residents, supporters and community leaders.
His arrival in Jos has also generated significant mobilisation among supporters in the state, with members of the Obidient Movement earlier urged to gather at Heipang Airport to receive him before his onward journey to Mangu.
