Kaduna Governor Uba Sani praises Federal Government as major rail and road projects receive approval
Nigeria’s Federal Government has approved infrastructure projects worth over ₦1.17 trillion for Kaduna State, a move officials say will significantly improve transportation and economic activity in the region.
The approval, granted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), includes a large-scale urban rail system and the reconstruction of a key federal highway. Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani welcomed the development, describing it as a transformative step for the state’s growth.
At the centre of the projects is the Kaduna Light Rail, valued at about ₦1 trillion. The proposed network will span approximately 50 kilometres, connecting major corridors such as Rigachikun to Sabon Tasha and Millennium City to Rigasa.
In addition, the government approved ₦178 billion for the rehabilitation of the Mando–Kaduna–Birnin Gwari road, a 122-kilometre route considered critical for regional connectivity and security.
Governor Sani said the combined investments are expected to enhance mobility, improve logistics, and stimulate economic activities across multiple sectors. He also noted that the rail project aligns with Kaduna’s broader transport reforms, including a Bus Rapid Transit system and the introduction of compressed natural gas-powered buses.
The governor further stated that the road project fulfils a prior federal commitment and would improve access to rural communities, support agriculture, and strengthen security in affected areas.
Infrastructure development remains a key focus of the current administration, with large-scale transport projects seen as essential to addressing Nigeria’s logistics challenges and boosting economic productivity.
The Kaduna approvals mark one of the largest recent infrastructure commitments in northern Nigeria, with implementation and delivery now expected to determine their long-term impact.
