Governor describes federal approval as a major milestone for Lagos transport reform and economic expansion

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) following the approval of Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project.

In a statement released on Friday, the governor described the decision as a significant step forward in the state’s efforts to modernise its transport system and ease the movement of millions of residents.

The proposed Green Line rail corridor is expected to span approximately 68 kilometres, linking Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, with about 17 stations planned across key commercial and residential areas including Victoria Island and Ajah.

According to the state government, the rail system is projected to serve up to 500,000 passengers daily at its initial stage, with capacity expected to rise to about one million over time. Officials say the line could transport up to 35,000 passengers per hour in each direction, significantly reducing travel time and pressure on Lagos’ road network.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the project aligns with broader efforts to improve urban mobility, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for residents. He also acknowledged continued federal support as critical to delivering large-scale infrastructure in Nigeria’s commercial hub.

The approval forms part of a wider federal infrastructure push, with the FEC also endorsing multi-billion-dollar rail projects across other states to expand Nigeria’s transport network.

The Lagos Green Line is expected to complement existing Blue and Red rail lines, as authorities seek long-term solutions to the city’s persistent traffic congestion and rapid urban growth.

With federal backing secured, attention now shifts to implementation timelines and execution, as Lagos positions the Green Line as a cornerstone of its evolving mass transit system.
