President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the Senate to expedite consideration and passage of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, saying the proposed legislation will strengthen the administration, governance and legal framework for public senior secondary education across Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to consider and pass the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, as part of his administration’s efforts to improve the management and quality of public senior secondary education nationwide.

The President’s request was contained in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

According to the President, the proposed amendment bill was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on April 30, 2026, before being transmitted to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.

Tinubu explained that the objective of the legislation is to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education by enhancing the legal and operational framework of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC).

He urged lawmakers to accord the bill accelerated consideration, describing it as part of his administration’s commitment to building stronger educational institutions and improving learning outcomes across the country.

The National Senior Secondary Education Commission is responsible for coordinating the development of public senior secondary education, supporting states through policy coordination, quality assurance and intervention programmes.

If passed by the National Assembly and assented to by the President, the amendment is expected to strengthen the commission’s statutory responsibilities and improve governance within Nigeria’s senior secondary education system.

Following the reading of the President’s letter, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the proposed legislation to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for legislative processing.

The committee was directed to schedule the bill for further consideration and report back to the Senate within one week.

The proposed amendment forms part of the Tinubu administration’s broader education reform agenda aimed at strengthening public institutions and improving educational standards nationwide. Lawmakers are expected to begin detailed consideration of the bill before deciding on its passage in the coming days.
